Its strife I cannot bear to see | A |
Its very praises hurt me more | B |
Than een its coldness did before | B |
Its hollow ways torment me now | C |
And start a cold sweat on my brow | C |
Its noise I cannot bear to hear | D |
Its joy is trouble to my ear | D |
Its ways I cannot bear to see | A |
Its crowds are solitudes to me | A |
O how I long to be agen | C |
That poor and independent man | C |
With labour's lot from morn to night | E |
And books to read at candle light | E |
That followed labour in the field | F |
From light to dark when toil could yield | F |
Real happiness with little gain | C |
Rich thoughtless health unknown to pain | C |
Though leaning on my spade to rest | G |
I've thought how richer folks were blest | G |
And knew not quiet was the best | G |
- | |
Go with your tauntings go | H |
Neer think to hurt me so | H |
I'll scoff at your disdain | C |
Cold though the winter blow | H |
When hills are free from snow | H |
It will be spring again | C |
- | |
So go and fare thee well | I |
Nor think ye'll have to tell | I |
Of wounded hearts from me | A |
Locked up in your hearts cell | I |
Mine still at home doth dwell | I |
In its first liberty | A |
- | |
Bees sip not at one flower | J |
Spring comes not with one shower | J |
Nor shines the sun alone | C |
Upon one favoured hour | J |
But with unstinted power | J |
Makes every day his own | C |
- | |
And for my freedom's sake | K |
With such I'll pattern take | K |
And rove and revel on | C |
Your gall shall never make | K |
Me honied paths forsake | K |
So prythee get thee gone | C |
- | |
And when my toil is blest | G |
And I find a maid possest | G |
Of truth that's not in thee | A |
Like bird that finds its nest | G |
I'll stop and take my rest | G |
And love as she loves me | A |
