O take this world away from meA
Its strife I cannot bear to seeA
Its very praises hurt me moreB
Than een its coldness did beforeB
Its hollow ways torment me nowC
And start a cold sweat on my browC
Its noise I cannot bear to hearD
Its joy is trouble to my earD
Its ways I cannot bear to seeA
Its crowds are solitudes to meA
O how I long to be agenC
That poor and independent manC
With labour's lot from morn to nightE
And books to read at candle lightE
That followed labour in the fieldF
From light to dark when toil could yieldF
Real happiness with little gainC
Rich thoughtless health unknown to painC
Though leaning on my spade to restG
I've thought how richer folks were blestG
And knew not quiet was the bestG
-
Go with your tauntings goH
Neer think to hurt me soH
I'll scoff at your disdainC
Cold though the winter blowH
When hills are free from snowH
It will be spring againC
-
So go and fare thee wellI
Nor think ye'll have to tellI
Of wounded hearts from meA
Locked up in your hearts cellI
Mine still at home doth dwellI
In its first libertyA
-
Bees sip not at one flowerJ
Spring comes not with one showerJ
Nor shines the sun aloneC
Upon one favoured hourJ
But with unstinted powerJ
Makes every day his ownC
-
And for my freedom's sakeK
With such I'll pattern takeK
And rove and revel onC
Your gall shall never makeK
Me honied paths forsakeK
So prythee get thee goneC
-
And when my toil is blestG
And I find a maid possestG
Of truth that's not in theeA
Like bird that finds its nestG
I'll stop and take my restG
And love as she loves meA
