Penance Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD BEBE FDFD EGEG

My lover died a century agoA
Her dear heart stricken by my sland'rous breathB
Wherefore the Gods forbade that I should knowA
The peace of deathB
-
Men pass my grave and say 'Twere well to sleepC
Like such an one amid the uncaring deadD
How should they know the vigils that I keepC
The tears I shedD
-
Upon the grave I count with lifeless breathB
Each night each year the flowers that bloom and dieE
Deeming the leaves that fall to dreamless deathB
More blest than IE
-
'Twas just last year I heard two lovers passF
So near I caught the tender words he saidD
To night the rain drenched breezes sway the grassF
Above his headD
-
That night full envious of his life was IE
That youth and love should stand at his behestG
To night I envy him that he should lieE
At utter restG
