John Alexander Mccrae Books, John Alexander Mccrae poetry book Sherman's March Through the Carolinas Authors: John G. Barrett
Publisher: UNC Press Books
Published Date: 2014-02-01
Categories: History
In retrospect, General William Tecumseh Sherman considered his march through the Carolinas the greatest of his military feats, greater even than the Georgia campaign. When he set out northward from Savannah with 60,000 veteran soldiers in January 1865, he was more convinced than ever that the bold application of his ideas of total war could speedily end the conflict. John Barrett's story of what happened in the three months that followed is based on printed memoirs and documentary records of those who fought and of the civilians who lived in the path of Sherman's onslaught. The burning of Columbia, the battle of Bentonville, and Joseph E. Johnston's surrender nine days after Appomattox are at the center of the story, but Barrett also focuses on other aspects of the campaign, such as the undisciplined pillaging of the 'bummers,' and on its effects on local populations.

The historic capital of Scotland is well known as a fortified medieval city with castle and crown-steepled church, its Royal Mile leading down to the Abey and Palace of Holyrood; as a merchant city of the Stuart period with Parliament House and closely built houses and tenements; as a Georgian town with the largest sequence of planned developments in Britain; as a Victorian town of churches and banks, hotels and pubs, of quiet surburbs; and as a twentieth-century city where the Festival and its Fringe have encouraged the rediscovery of old buildings and the planning of new ones. A comprehensive gazetteer is provided to all notable developments of central Edinburgh, the seaport town of Leith and the suburban neighbourhoods.

John Alexander Mccrae Books, John Alexander Mccrae poetry book The Early History of Elora, Ontario and Vicinity Authors: John Connon
Publisher: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
Published Date: 2006-01-01
Categories: History
Elora: The Early History of Elora and Vicinity provides little-known details about the settlement and development of the Elora area in southern Ontario from the earliest settler in 1817. Then, as now, people were drawn to the Elora Gorge and the rocky banks of the Grand River. The book is a compilation of material that appeared weekly in The Elora Express between 1906 and 1909 with some additional material from the 1920s. Connon traces the settlers as they arrive and reports on the development of the town as they acquired a grist mill, a store, a bridge, and inevitably a railway. Rich with genealogical information, this is an important historical document. Introduction by Gerald Noonan.
