I was made to feel inferior
Not superior
I was meant to be the debtor
Not the creditor
I wasn’t meant to be the governor
Neither the senator

But I’m Black, and I’m proud
For my colour is distinct within any crowd

I’m an African,
A Sierra Leonean
I wasn’t meant to be an American
Neither a European

I was told I would make it
Had my skin colour being lighter
I asked what’s the benefit?
Would my future be brighter?

I helped build the America we admire
I was forced to be a slave that everyone could hire

I don’t need to be brown to be pretty
To those involved, I say What a pity!
I don’t need a lotion or a cream
To do what I want or to achieve my dream
