Accomplishment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH FFII JJKK LLMM NNOO PPHH

HOW is it that masters and science and artA
One spark of intelligence fail to impartA
Unless in that chemical union combinedB
Of which the result in one word is a mindB
-
A youth may have studied and travelled abroadC
May sing like Apollo and paint like a ClaudeC
And speak all the languages under the poleD
And have every gift in the world but a soulD
-
That drapery wrought by the leisurely fairE
Called patchwork may well to such genius compareE
Wherein every tint of the rainbow appearsF
And stars to adorn it are forced from their spheresF
-
There glows a bright pattern a sprig or a spotG
'Twixt cluster of roses full blown and red hotG
Here magnified tulips divided in threeH
Alternately shaded with sections of treeH
-
But when all is finished this labour of yearsF
A mass unharmonious unmeaning appearsF
'Tis showy but void of intelligent graceI
It is not a landscape it is not a faceI
-
'Tis thus Education so called in our schoolsJ
With costly materials and capital toolsJ
Sits down to her work if you duly reward herK
And sends it home finished according to orderK
-
See French and Italian spread out on her lapL
Then Dancing springs up and skips into a gapL
Next Drawing and all its varieties comeM
Sewed down in their place by her finger and thumbM
-
And then for completing her fanciful robesN
Geography Music the use of the GlobesN
c c which match as they willO
Are sown into shape and set down in the billO
-
Thus Science distorted and torn into hitsP
Art tortured and frightened half out of her witsP
In portions and patches some light and some shadyH
Are stitched up together to make a young ladyH
