Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEE FFGG HHII EEJJ KKLL MANN OOPP MQNN AQCC AMNNI am a hunter by profession | A |
And when I make this confession | A |
Of what I saw with mine own eyes | B |
It may cause you some surprise | B |
- | |
But we at once now you do warn | C |
That this is not a made up yarn | D |
It happened in the interior | E |
Far north of Lake Superior | E |
- | |
When up the hill setting my traps | F |
I heard on trees peculiar raps | F |
It made me then attentive hark | G |
And then I heard pulling off the bark | G |
- | |
It was a bright and pleasant day | H |
The distance was three miles away | H |
And it caused me but slight alarm | I |
When they around bark placed each arm | I |
- | |
And threw the bark o'er their shoulder | E |
I being a distant beholder | E |
Knew not what end they had in view | J |
But I must own my wonder grew | J |
- | |
When I saw those men were warm dressed | K |
With good fur robe each one was blessed | K |
In single file they marched up hill | L |
With strangest thoughts my mind did fill | L |
- | |
When each man in his robe began | M |
With tough bark to make toboggan | A |
And quick as lightning down they slide | N |
It seemed to me a dangerous ride | N |
- | |
The spot was covered o'er with hairs | O |
And it seem'd mixed with blood of bears | O |
And my two dogs Bull and Daisy | P |
At sight and scent of it went crazy | P |
- | |
Could none of these been a true man | M |
Or was I gross deceived by bruin | Q |
It was a long and glassy slide | N |
Reached far up the mountain side | N |
- | |
They had been first enjoying the fun | A |
Of sliding down on their bare skin | Q |
Until their hide was getting worn | C |
And their flesh was somewhat torn | C |
- | |
So Bear invented Toboggan | A |
Which is a blessing to young man | M |
And the fair maiden by his side | N |
For both enjoy the pleasant ride | N |
