In the great Province of BengalA
The scavenger is the JackalA
For it doth love each night to feastB
On the carrion of some beastB
-
The stench of which pollutes the airC
But to this beast 'tis sweet and fairC
Carcass to it is source of wealthD
Jackals promote the public healthD
-
When the Seapoys did rebelA
A strange adventure child befellE
An English Colonel and his wifeF
They thought still distant was the strifeF
-
And left their little girl at homeG
While they to distant village roamG
And thus saved their lives from slaughterH
But rebels carried off their daughterH
-
Their servant woman a HindooB
They knew her to be kind and trueI
It almost drove her crazy wildB
To see them dragging off the childB
-
The Colonel soon he doth returnJ
And in his breast fierce rage doth burnJ
He knows the child is doomed to dieB
But he the rebels will defyB
-
So quick he doth gird on his swordB
And asks for blessings from the LordB
He puts his pistols in their caseK
And carries with him trusty braceK
-
Seapoys by the river sideB
Left child to drown in rising tideB
But Jackal went there for waterH
And spied the Colonel's daughterH
-
He knew the river soon would riseL
So quick he carried off the prizeL
Though love for child he does not feelM
He only wants her for a mealM
-
He ran with her towards the southN
Carrying her in his broad mouthN
The Colonel had a strong desireH
On this savage beast for to fireH
-
But from it he refrained for fearO
The ball might strike his little dearO
He saw that brute was now wearyP
Running with his little dearieP
-
So he then quickly gave it chaseK
And full soon then he gained the raceK
The coward beast then dropped the childB
And fled away in terror wildB
-
With joy Colonel he doth weepQ
When he finds babe is still asleepQ
And on it neither scar nor traceK
Can disfigure its fair faceK
-
And now he takes it in his armsR
With joy and pride surveys its charmsR
We fear that kisses did it smotherP
When he handed it to motherP
