Without A Minister Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII FJFJKK LMLMNO PQPQRR

The congregation was devoutA
The minister inspiredB
Their attitude to those withoutA
By every one admiredB
And all things so harmonious seemedC
Of no calamity we dreamedC
-
But just in this quiescent stateD
A little cloud aroseE
Portentous of our certain fateD
As everybody knowsE
Our pastor took it in his headF
His resignation must be readF
-
In every eye a tear drop stoodG
For we accepted itH
Reluctantly but nothing couldG
Make him recant one bitH
And soon he left for distant partsI
While we were left with broken heartsI
-
And next the patriarch who ledF
For nearly three score yearsJ
Our Sabbath school its worthy headF
Rekindled all our fearsJ
By saying with a smile benignK
Since it's the fashion I'll resignK
-
And so he did but promptly cameL
Forth one of good reportM
Our Superintendent is his nameL
Who tries to hold the fortM
With wisdom tact and rare good senseN
In this his first experienceO
-
The world looks on and says How strangeP
They hang together soQ
These Baptists do and never changeP
But right straight onward goQ
While other flocks are scattering allR
And some have strayed beyond recallR
