Thy Will Be Done Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF GEGGE HIHHI JKJJK LMLLM NJNNJ

Sometimes the silver cord of lifeA
Is loosed at one brief strokeB
As when the elements at strifeA
With Nature's wild contentions rifeA
Uproot the sturdy oakB
-
Or fell disease in patience borneC
Attenuates the frameD
Till the meek sufferer wan and wornC
Of energy and beauty shornC
Death's sweet release would claimD
-
By instant touch or long decayE
Is dissolution wroughtF
When lost to earth the grave and gayE
The young and old who pass awayE
Abide in hallowed thoughtF
-
In dear regard together drawnG
Affection's debt to payE
Fond greetings we exchange at dawnG
With one who ere the day be goneG
Is bruised and lifeless clayE
-
O thou in manhood's morning timeH
With health and hope elateI
For whom in youth's enchanting primeH
The bells of promise seemed to chimeH
We mourn thy early fateI
-
To us how sudden yet to theeJ
Perchance God kindly gaveK
Some warning ere the fatal keyJ
Unlocked the door of mysteryJ
That lies beyond the graveK
-
Then let us hope that one who foundL
Such favor trust and loveM
And cordial praise from all aroundL
For rare fidelity renownedL
Found favor too aboveM
-
So all is well though swift or slowN
God's will be done and weJ
Draw near to him for close and lowN
Beneath his chastening hand the blowN
Will fall less heavilyJ
