Syringas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHIHI EJEJKLKL MNMNOPOP QNQNRHRH

The smallest flower beside my pathA
In loveliness of bloomB
Some element of comfort hathA
To rid my heart of gloomB
But these of spotless purityC
And fragrant as the roseD
As sad a sight recall to meC
As time shall e'er discloseD
-
Oh there are pictures on the brainE
Sometimes by shadows madeF
Till dust is blent with dust againG
That never never fadeF
And things supremely bright and fairH
As ever known in lifeI
Suggest the darkness of despairH
And sanguinary strifeI
-
I shut my eyes 'tis all in vainE
The battle field appearsJ
And one among the thousands slainE
In manhood's brilliant yearsJ
An elbow pillowing his headK
And on the crimson sandL
Syringa blooms distained and deadK
Within his rigid handL
-
Could she foresee who from the stemM
Had plucked that little sprayN
Of flowers that he would cherish themM
Unto his dying dayN
Give these to M 'tis almost nightO
And tell her that I loveP
Alas the letter he would writeO
Was finished up aboveP
-
And so with each recurring springQ
On Decoration dayN
When to our heroes' graves we bringQ
The blossom wealth of MayN
While martial strains are soft and lowR
And music seems a prayerH
Unto a hallowed spot I goR
And leave syringas thereH
