The days are long and lonelyA
The weary eve comes onB
And the nights are filled with dreamingC
Of one beloved and goneD
-
I reach out in the darknessE
And clasp but empty airF
For Rutha dear has vanishedG
I wonder wonder whereF
-
Yet must it be her natureH
So lovely pure and trueI
So nearly like the angelsJ
Is she an angel tooI
-
The cottage is dismantledK
Of all that made it brightL
Beyond its silent portalM
No love nor life nor lightL
-
Where are the hopes I cherishedG
The joys that once I knewI
The dreams the aspirationsN
All all are perished tooI
-
Yes love's dear chain is brokenO
From shore to shore I roamP
No comfort no companionO
No happiness no homeP
-
Oh could I but enfold herH
Unto my heart once moreQ
If aught could e'er restore meA
My darling as beforeQ
-
If God would only tell meA
Such myriads aboveR
Why He must needs have takenO
The one I loved to loveR
-
If God would only tell meA
Why multitudes are leftS
Unhappy and unlovelyM
And I am thus bereftS
-
If O my soul be silentT
And some day thou shalt seeA
Through mystery and shadowU
And know why it must beA
-
To every cry of anguishV
From every heart distressedW
Can be no other answerH
Than this God knoweth bestW
