Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCD EFFGHHHG EEEIJKKI LLMNOOON PPPQRRRQ SSSTDDDT

'Twas on a day of cold and sleetA
A little nomad of the streetA
With tattered garments shoeless feetA
And face with hunger wanB
Great wonder eyes though beautifulC
Hedged in by features pinched and dullC
Betraying lines so pitifulC
By sorrow sharply drawnD
-
Ere yet the service half was o'erE
Approached the great cathedral doorF
As choir and organ joined to pourF
Their sweetness on the airG
Then sudden bold impelled to glideH
With fleetness to the altar's sideH
Her trembling form she sought to hideH
Amid the shadows thereG
-
Half fearful lest some worshiperE
Enveloped close in robes of furE
Had cast a scornful glance at herE
As she had stolen byI
But soon the swelling anthem fraughtJ
With reverence her spirit caughtK
As rapt she listened heeding notK
The darkness drawing nighI
-
'Mid novelty and sweet surpriseL
Her soul enraptured seemed to riseL
And tread the realms of ParadiseM
Her shivering limbs grew warmN
And as the shadows longer creptO
Across the chancel angels keptO
Their vigils o'er her as she sleptO
Secure from cold and stormN
-
No sound her peaceful slumber brokeP
But one whose gentle face bespokeP
True goodness took her costly cloakP
In tender thoughtful wayQ
And as the sleeper sweetly smiledR
Perchance by dreams of Heaven beguiledR
O'erspread the passive slumbering childR
And softly stepped awayQ
-
So rest thee child since Sorrow's dartS
Has touched like thine the Saviour's heartS
Thou hast a nearer dearer partS
In his great love for theeT
And when life's shadows all are goneD
May Heaven reveal a brighter dawnD
To thee who unaware hast drawnD
Our hearts in sympathyT
