Mount Vernon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDAB EBFFGGEB HIJJKKHI LMNNOOLM PQRKIISQ

Subdued and sad I trod the placeA
Where he the hero lived and diedB
Where long entombed beneath the shadeC
By willow bough and cypress madeC
The peaceful scene with verdure rifeD
He and the partner of his lifeD
Beloved of every land and raceA
Are sleeping side by sideB
-
The summer solstice at its heightE
Reflected from Potomac's tideB
A glare of light and through the treesF
Intensified the Southern breezeF
That dallied in the deep ravinesG
With graceful ferns and evergreensG
While Northern cheeks so strangely whiteE
Grew dark as Nubia's prideB
-
What must this homestead once have beenH
In boundless hospitalityI
When Greene or Putnam may have metJ
The host who welcomed LafayetteJ
Or when Pulaski honored guestK
Accepted shelter food and restK
While rank and talent gathered inH
Its banquet hall of luxuryI
-
What comfort cheer and kind intentL
The weary stranger oft hath knownM
When she its mistress fair and goodN
Reigned here in peerless womanhoodN
When soft shy maiden fancy gaveO
Encouragement to soldiers braveO
And Washington his presence lentL
To grace its bright hearthstoneM
-
O beautiful Mount Vernon homeP
The Mecca of our long desireQ
Of more than passing interestR
To North and South to East and WestK
To all Columbia's children freeI
A precious priceless legacyI
Thine altar shrine as pilgrims comeS
Rekindles patriot fireQ
