Along the avenue I pass	A
Huge piles of wood and stone	B
And glance at each amorphous mass	A
Whose cumbrous weight has crushed the grass	A
With half resentful groan	B

Say I O labor to despoil	C
Some lovely forest scene	D
Or at the granite stratum toil	C
And desecrate whole roods of soil	C
Is vandal like and mean	D

Than ever to disfigure thus	E
Our prairie garden land	F
Let me consort with Cerberus	E
Be chained to crags precipitous	E
Or seek an alien strand	F
	-
But while this pining pouting Muse	E
The interval ignores	E
Deft industry no time to lose	E
Contrives and carries hoists and hews	E
And symmetry restores	E

Behold of rock and pile and board	G
A modern miracle	C
My neighbor's dwelling roofed and floored	G
That rapid grew as Jonah's gourd	G
And far more beautiful	C
	-
The artisan's receding gait	H
Has brushed the chips away	I
Where innocence shall recreate	H
Or like the flowers grow and wait	H
The balminess of May	I
	-
An arid spot where careless feet	J
Have long been wont to roam	K
Where cattle grazed as if to eat	J
Were life's delicious richest treat	J
Becomes a charming home	K

O man primeval hadst thou known	B
Ere rude hands scooped thy grave	L
Of Homestead Act or Building Loan	B
Thou wouldst have quite disdained to own	B
A rugged cliff or cave	L

And now I see how skill and art	M
May cleave fair nature through	N
Disintegrate her breathing heart	M
And to the tissues torn impart	M
A use and beauty new	N
	-
And this improvement is to turn	O
The things which God has given	P
To their best purpose as we learn	O
To make the place where we sojourn	O
Homelike and more like Heaven	P
