Improvement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF EEEEE GCGGC HIHHI JKJJK BLBBL MNMMN OPOOP

Along the avenue I passA
Huge piles of wood and stoneB
And glance at each amorphous massA
Whose cumbrous weight has crushed the grassA
With half resentful groanB
-
Say I O labor to despoilC
Some lovely forest sceneD
Or at the granite stratum toilC
And desecrate whole roods of soilC
Is vandal like and meanD
-
Than ever to disfigure thusE
Our prairie garden landF
Let me consort with CerberusE
Be chained to crags precipitousE
Or seek an alien strandF
-
But while this pining pouting MuseE
The interval ignoresE
Deft industry no time to loseE
Contrives and carries hoists and hewsE
And symmetry restoresE
-
Behold of rock and pile and boardG
A modern miracleC
My neighbor's dwelling roofed and flooredG
That rapid grew as Jonah's gourdG
And far more beautifulC
-
The artisan's receding gaitH
Has brushed the chips awayI
Where innocence shall recreateH
Or like the flowers grow and waitH
The balminess of MayI
-
An arid spot where careless feetJ
Have long been wont to roamK
Where cattle grazed as if to eatJ
Were life's delicious richest treatJ
Becomes a charming homeK
-
O man primeval hadst thou knownB
Ere rude hands scooped thy graveL
Of Homestead Act or Building LoanB
Thou wouldst have quite disdained to ownB
A rugged cliff or caveL
-
And now I see how skill and artM
May cleave fair nature throughN
Disintegrate her breathing heartM
And to the tissues torn impartM
A use and beauty newN
-
And this improvement is to turnO
The things which God has givenP
To their best purpose as we learnO
To make the place where we sojournO
Homelike and more like HeavenP
