Holiday Home Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GBHH IIJJ KKEE LLMM NNGB MMMM OOPP QQRS TTUU VVWN XXYY ZZBBOf all the sweet visions that come unto me | A |
Of happy refreshment by land or by sea | A |
Like oases where in life's desert I roam | B |
Is nothing so pleasant as Holiday Home | B |
- | |
I climb to the top of the highest of hills | C |
And look to the west with affectionate thrills | C |
And fancy I stand by the emerald side | D |
Of charming Geneva like Switzerland's pride | D |
- | |
In distant perspective unruffled it lies | E |
Except for the packet that paddles and plies | E |
And puffing its way like a pioneer makes | F |
Its daily go round o'er this pearl of the lakes | F |
- | |
Untroubled except for the urchins that come | G |
From many a haunt that is never a home | B |
Instinctive as ducklings to swim and to wade | H |
Scarce knowing aforetime why water was made | H |
- | |
All placid except for the dip of the oar | I |
Of the skiff or the barge striking out from the shore | I |
While merry excursionists shout till the gale | J |
Reverberates laughter through rigging and sail | J |
- | |
How it scallops its basin and shimmers and shines | K |
Like a salver of silver encompassed with vines | K |
In crystal illusion reflecting the skies | E |
And the mountain that seems from its bosom to rise | E |
- | |
There stands a great house on a summit so high | L |
Like an eyrie of safety enroofed by the sky | L |
And I think of the rest and the comfort up there | M |
To sleep and to breathe that empyreal air | M |
- | |
Oh the charm of the glen and the stream and the wood | N |
Can never be written nor be understood | N |
Except by the weary and languid who come | G |
To bask in the quiet of Holiday Home | B |
- | |
From prisonlike cellars unwholesome and drear | M |
From attic and alley from labor severe | M |
For the poor and the famished doth kindness prepare | M |
A world of diversion and excellent fare | M |
- | |
To swing in the hammock disport in the breeze | O |
To lie in the shade of magnificent trees | O |
Oh this is like quaffing from luxury's bowl | P |
The life giving essence for body and soul | P |
- | |
Nor distance nor time shall efface from the mind | Q |
The influence gentle the ministry kind | Q |
While gratitude fondly enhallows the thought | R |
Of a home and a holiday never forgot | S |
- | |
Ah one is remembered of saintliest men | T |
To lovely Geneva who comes not again | T |
Who left a sweet impress wherever he trod | U |
Humanity's helper companion of God | U |
- | |
In the hearts of the many there sheltered and fed | V |
As unto a hospice by Providence led | V |
Does often a thought like a sunbeam intrude | W |
Of the bounty so free and the donors so good | N |
- | |
Who of their abundance have cheerfully given | X |
Wherewith to develop an embryo heaven | X |
To brighten conditions too hard and too sad | Y |
And make the unhappy contented and glad | Y |
- | |
Be blessedness theirs who like knights of renown | Z |
Thus scatter such largesse o'er country and town | Z |
Their monument building in many a dome | B |
Like healthful and beautiful Holiday Home | B |
