Whom God hath joined ah this sententious phraseB
A meaning deeper than the sea conveysB
And of a sweet and solemn service tellsC
With the rich resonance of wedding bellsC
It speaks of vows and obligations givenD
As if amid the harmony of heavenD
While seraph lips approving seem to sayE
Love honor and obeyE

Is Hymen then ambassador divineF
His mission matrimonial and benignF
The heart to counsel ardor to inciteG
Convert the nun rebuke the eremiteG
As if were this his mandate from the throneH
It is not good for them to be aloneH
Behold the land its fruitage and its flowersI
Not mine and thine but oursI

Did not great Paul aver in lucid spellJ
That they of conjugal intent do wellJ
But hinted at a better state 'tis oneD
With which two loving souls have naught to doG
For in well doing being quite contentG
Be there another state more excellentG
To which the celibate doth fain repairK
They neither know nor careK

And does the Lord of all become High PriestG
And with his presence grace the wedding feastG
Then must the whole celestial throng draw nighL
For nuptials there are none beyond the skyL
So is the union sanctified and blestG
For Love is host and Love is welcome guestG
So may the joyous bridal season beM
Like that of GalileeM

Sweet Mary of the blessed name so dearN
To all the loving Saviour who revereN
Madonna like be thou in every graceO
That shall adorn thee in exalted placeO
And thine the happy privilege to proveL
The depth the tenderness of woman's loveL
So shall the heart that honors thee todayG
Bow down to thee alwayP

O radiant June in wealth of light and airK
With leaf and bud and blossom everywhereK
Let all bright tokens affluent combineF
And round the bridal pair in splendor shineF
Let sweethearts coy and lovers fond and trueG
On this glad day their tender vows renewG
And all in wedlock's bond rejoice as theyG
Whom God hath joined for ayeL
