Christmas At Church Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCAB DEFFDE GHIIGH JKLLJK MNOOMN PQRRSQ OEDDOE'Twas drawing near the holiday | A |
When piety and pity met | B |
In whisp'ring council and agreed | C |
That Christmas time in homes of need | C |
Should be remembered in a way | A |
They never could forget | B |
- | |
Then noble generosity | D |
Took youth and goodness by the hand | E |
And planned a thousand charming ways | F |
To celebrate this best of days | F |
While hearts were held in sympathy | D |
By love's encircling band | E |
- | |
So multitudes together came | G |
Like wandering magi from the East | H |
With precious gifts unto the King | I |
With every good and perfect thing | I |
To satisfy a shivering frame | G |
Or amplify a feast | H |
- | |
The angels had looked long and far | J |
The happy scene to parallel | K |
When through the sanctuary door | L |
Were carried gifts from shop and store | L |
The treasures of the rich bazaar | J |
To give but not to sell | K |
- | |
As once the apostolic twelve | M |
Of goods allotment made | N |
So equity dealt out with care | O |
The widow's and the orphan's share | O |
And of the aged forced to delve | M |
At drudging task or trade | N |
- | |
Oh could the joy which tears express | P |
That out of gladness come | Q |
Be mirrored in its tender glow | R |
Before the beautiful tableau | R |
Ingratitude and selfishness | S |
Would shrink abashed and dumb | Q |
- | |
If every year and everywhere | O |
Could kindness thus expand | E |
In bounteous gratuity | D |
To all her children earth would be | D |
A flowery vale like Eden fair | O |
A milk and honey land | E |
