Be Courteous Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK LMNM OPOP KQKO

Ah yes why not Is one more adventitious bornA
Than others shekels richer honors fuller and all thatB
That he can pass his fellows by with lofty scornA
Nor even show this slight regard the lifting of the hatB
-
Why prate of social status class or rank when earthC
Is common tenting ground the heritage of all mankindD
Except in purity is there no royal birthC
No true nobility but nobleness of heart and mindD
-
Life is so short one journey long a pilgrimageE
That we cannot retrace nor ever pass this way againF
Then why not turn for some poor soul a brighter pageG
And line the way with courtesies unto our fellow menF
-
To give a graceful word or smile or lend a handH
To one downcast and trembling on the borders of despairI
May help him to look up and better understandH
Why God has made the sky so bright and put the rainbow thereI
-
Be courteous is nothing helpful half so cheapJ
As kind urbanity that doth so much of gladness bringK
More precious too than all the treasures of the deepJ
Making the winter of discomfort seem like joyous springK
-
Be courteous and gentle be serene and goodL
Those grand ennobling and enduring virtues all may claimM
Of each may it be said of the great multitudeN
Oh that my life were more like such an one of blessed fameM
-
Is it that over crowding care anxietyO
Vortex of pleasure the incessant round of toil and strifeP
Beget indifference repressing love and sympathyO
Till we forget the beautiful amenities of lifeP
-
Then cometh a sad day when with a poignant stingK
Lost opportunities shall speak to us reproachfullyQ
And ours shall be the disapproval of the KingK
Discourteous to these my creatures ye have wounded MeO
