Autumn-time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EEFGGG GGHIIH JJKGGK GGLMNL KKGHHG OGPGGQ GGGRRG GGGSSG| Like music heard in mellow chime | A |
| The charm of her transforming time | A |
| Upon my senses steals | B |
| As softly as from sunny walls | C |
| In day's decline their shadow falls | C |
| Across the sleeping fields | D |
| - | |
| A fair illumined book | E |
| Is nature's page whereon I look | E |
| While autumn turns the leaves | F |
| And many a thought of her designs | G |
| Between those rare resplendent lines | G |
| My fancy interweaves | G |
| - | |
| I dream of aborigines | G |
| Who must have copied from the trees | G |
| The fashions of the day | H |
| Those gorgeous topknots for the head | I |
| Of yellow tufts and feathers red | I |
| With beads and sinews gay | H |
| - | |
| I wonder if the saints behold | J |
| Such pageantry of colors bold | J |
| Beyond the radiant sky | K |
| And if the tints of Paradise | G |
| Are heightened by the strange device | G |
| Of making all things die | K |
| - | |
| Yea even so for Nature glows | G |
| Because of her expiring throes | G |
| As if around her tomb | L |
| Unmeet it were the look severe | M |
| That designates a common bier | N |
| Enwreathed in deepest gloom | L |
| - | |
| And so I meditate if aught | K |
| Can be so fair where death is not | K |
| If Heaven's loveliness | G |
| Is born of struggle and decay | H |
| And but for funeral array | H |
| Would it be beautiless | G |
| - | |
| Oh solemn sad sweet mystery | O |
| That Earth's unrivaled brilliancy | G |
| Is but her splendid pall | P |
| That Heaven were not what it is | G |
| But for that crown of tragedies | G |
| The sacrifice for all | Q |
| - | |
| So not a charm would Zion lose | G |
| Were it bereft of sparkling hues | G |
| In gilded lanes and leas | G |
| It would be bright though not a flower | R |
| Unclosed in its celestial bower | R |
| And void of jeweled trees | G |
| - | |
| Yet lily like one bloom I see | G |
| Its name is his who died for me | G |
| Whose matchless beauty shows | G |
| Perfection on its bleeding stem | S |
| The blossom bud of Bethlehem | S |
| The Resurrection Rose | G |
