Like music heard in mellow chimeA
The charm of her transforming timeA
Upon my senses stealsB
As softly as from sunny wallsC
In day's decline their shadow fallsC
Across the sleeping fieldsD
-
A fair illumined bookE
Is nature's page whereon I lookE
While autumn turns the leavesF
And many a thought of her designsG
Between those rare resplendent linesG
My fancy interweavesG
-
I dream of aboriginesG
Who must have copied from the treesG
The fashions of the dayH
Those gorgeous topknots for the headI
Of yellow tufts and feathers redI
With beads and sinews gayH
-
I wonder if the saints beholdJ
Such pageantry of colors boldJ
Beyond the radiant skyK
And if the tints of ParadiseG
Are heightened by the strange deviceG
Of making all things dieK
-
Yea even so for Nature glowsG
Because of her expiring throesG
As if around her tombL
Unmeet it were the look severeM
That designates a common bierN
Enwreathed in deepest gloomL
-
And so I meditate if aughtK
Can be so fair where death is notK
If Heaven's lovelinessG
Is born of struggle and decayH
And but for funeral arrayH
Would it be beautilessG
-
Oh solemn sad sweet mysteryO
That Earth's unrivaled brilliancyG
Is but her splendid pallP
That Heaven were not what it isG
But for that crown of tragediesG
The sacrifice for allQ
-
So not a charm would Zion loseG
Were it bereft of sparkling huesG
In gilded lanes and leasG
It would be bright though not a flowerR
Unclosed in its celestial bowerR
And void of jeweled treesG
-
Yet lily like one bloom I seeG
Its name is his who died for meG
Whose matchless beauty showsG
Perfection on its bleeding stemS
The blossom bud of BethlehemS
The Resurrection RoseG
