Oh what a blessed intervalA
A rainy day may beB
No lightning flash nor tempest roarC
But one incessant steady pourC
Of dripping melodyB
When from their sheltering retreatD
Go not with voluntary feetD
The storm beleaguered familyB
Nor bird nor animalA
-
When business takes a little lullA
And gives the merchantmanE
A chance to seek domestic scenesF
To interview the magazinesF
Convoke his growing clanE
The boys and girls almost unknownE
And get acquainted with his ownE
As well the household budget scanE
Or write a canticleA
-
When farmer John ransacks the barnE
Hunts up the harness oldG
Nigh twenty years since it was newE
Puts in an extra thong or twoE
And hopes the thing will holdG
Without that missing martingaleA
That bothered Dobbin head and tailA
He gentle equine safe controlledG
But by a twist of yarnE
-
When busy fingers may provideH
A savory repastH
To whet the languid appetiteH
And give to eating a delightH
Unknown since seasons pastH
Avaunt ill cookery whose ranksI
Develop dull dyspeptic cranksI
Who forced to diet or to fastH
Ergo have dined and diedH
-
It is a day of rummagingJ
The closets to exploreC
To take down from the dusty shelvesK
The books that never read themselvesK
And turning pages o'erL
Discover therein safely laidH
The bills forgot and never paidH
Somehow that of the corner storeC
Such dunning memories bringJ
-
It gives a chance to liquidateH
Epistolary debtsM
To write in humble penitenceM
Acknowledging the negligenceM
The sin that so besetsM
And cheer the hearts that hold us dearN
Who've known and loved us many a yearN
Back to the days of pantaletsM
And swinging on the gateH
-
It gives occasion to repairO
Unlucky circumstanceM
To intercept the ragged endsM
And for arrears to make amendsM
By mending hose and pantsM
The romping young ones to re dressM
Without those signs of hole y nessM
That so bespeak the mendicantsM
By every rip and tearO
-
It is a time to gather roundH
The old piano grandH
Its dulcet harmonies unstirredH
Since Lucy sang so like a birdH
And played with graceful handH
Like Lucy's voice in pathos sweetH
Repeating softly Shall we meetH
Is only in the heavenly landH
Such clear soprano soundH
-
It is a time for happy chatH
En cercle tete a teteH
Discuss the doings of the dayH
The club the sermon or the playH
Affairs of church and stateH
Fond reminiscence to exploreC
The pleasant episodes of yoreC
And so till raindrops all abateH
As erst on AraratH
-
Ah yes a rainy day may beB
A blessed intervalA
A little halt for introspectH
A little moment to reflectH
On life's discrepancyB
Our puny stint so poorly doneE
The larger duties scarce begunE
And so may conscience culpableA
Suggest a remedyB
