I thought I had forever lostA
Alas though still so youngB
The tender joys and sorrows allC
That unto youth belongD
-
The sufferings sweet the impulsesE
Our inmost hearts that warmF
Whatever gives this life of oursG
Its value and its charmH
-
What sore laments what bitter tearsI
O'er my sad state I shedJ
When first I felt from my cold heartK
Its gentle pains had fledJ
-
Its throbs I felt no more my loveL
Within me seemed to dieM
Nor from my frozen senseless breastN
Escaped a single sighM
-
I wept o'er my sad hapless lotO
The life of life seemed lostA
The earth an arid wildernessP
Locked in eternal frostA
-
The day how dreary and the nightQ
How dull and dark and loneR
The moon for me no brightness hadS
No star in heaven shoneR
-
And yet the old love was the causeT
Of all the tears I shedJ
Still in my inmost breast I feltU
The heart was not yet deadJ
-
My weary fancy still would craveV
The images it lovedW
And its capricious longings stillX
A source of sorrow provedY
-
But e'en that lingering spark of griefZ
Was soon within me spentA2
And I the strength no longer hadS
To utter a lamentA2
-
And there I lay stunned stupefiedA2
Nor asked for comfort moreB2
My heart to hopeless blank despairC2
Itself had given o'erD2
-
How changed alas was I from himE2
Who once with passion thrilledA2
Whose ardent soul was ever onceF2
With sweet illusions filledA2
-
The swallow to my window stillX
Would come to greet the dawnG2
But his sweet song no echo foundA2
In my poor heart forlornH2
-
Nor pleased me more in autumn grayI2
Upon the hill side loneR
The cheerful vesper bell or lightA2
Of the departing sunJ2
-
In vain the evening star I sawK2
Above the silent valeL2
And vainly warbled in the groveM2
The plaintive nightingaleL2
-
And you ye furtive glances brightA2
From gentle eyes that roveM2
The sweet the gracious messagesN2
Of first immortal LoveL
-
The soft white hand that tenderlyO2
My own hand seemed to wooP2
All all your magic spells were vainQ2
My torpor to subdueP2
-
Of every pleasure quite bereftA2
Sad but of tranquil mienR2
A state of perfect littlenessN2
Yet with a face sereneR2
-
Save for the lingering wish indeedA2
In death to sink to restA2
The force of all desire was spentA2
In my exhausted breastA2
-
As some poor feeble wandererD2
With age and sorrow bentA2
The April of my years alasN2
Thus listlessly I spentA2
-
Thus listlessly thus wearilyO2
Didst thou consume O heartA2
Those golden days ineffableS2
So swiftly that departA2
-
Who from this heavy heedless restA2
Awakens me againT2
What new what magic power is thisN2
I feel within me reignQ2
-
Ye motions sweet ye imagesN2
Ye throbs illusions blestA2
Ah no ye are not then shut outA2
Forever from this breastA2
-
The glorious light of golden daysN2
Do ye again unfoldA2
The old affections that I lostA2
Do I once more beholdA2
-
Now as I gaze upon the skyM
Or on the verdant fieldsN2
Each thing with sorrow me inspiresN2
And each a pleasure yieldsN2
-
The mountain forest and the shoreB2
Once more my heart rejoiceN2
The fountain speaks to me once moreB2
The sea hath found a voiceN2
-
Who after all this apathyO2
Restores to me my tearsN2
Each moment as I look aroundA2
How changed the world appearsN2
-
Hath hope perchance O my poor heartA2
Beguiled thee of thy painQ2
Ah no the gracious smile of hopeU2
I ne'er shall see againT2
-
Nature bestowed these impulsesN2
And these illusions blestA2
Their inborn influence in meO2
By suffering was suppressedA2
-
But not annulled not overcomeV2
By cruel blows of FateA2
Nor by the inauspicious frownW2
Of Truth importunateA2
-
I know she has no sympathyO2
For fond imaginingsN2
I know that Nature too is deafX2
Nor heeds our sufferingsN2
-
That for our good she nothing caresN2
Our being only heedsN2
And with the sight of our distressN2
Her wild caprices feedsN2
-
I know the poor man pleads in vainQ2
For others' sympathyO2
That scornfully or heedlesslyS2
All from his presence fleeS2
-
That both for genius and for worthY2
This age has no respectA2
That all who cherish lofty aimsN2
Are left to cold neglectA2
-
And you ye eyes so tremulousN2
With lustre all divineZ2
I know how false your splendors areA3
Where no true love doth shineZ2
-
No love mysterious and profoundA2
Illumes you with its glowS2
Nor gleams one spark of genial fireD2
Beneath that breast of snowS2
-
Nay it is wont to laugh to scornH2
Another's tender painQ2
The fervent flame of heavenly loveL
To treat with cold disdainQ2
-
Yet I with thankfulness once moreB2
The old illusions greetA2
And feel with shock of pleased surpriseN2
The heart within me beatA2
-
To thee alone this force renewedA2
This vital power I oweS2
From thee alone my faithful heartA2
My only comforts flowS2
-
I feel it is the destinyS2
Of every noble mindA2
In Fate in Fortune Beauty and the WorldA2
An enemy to findA2
-
But while thou liv'st nor yield'st to FateA2
Contending without fearB3
I will not tax with crueltyS2
The power that placed me hereC3
