Two small sweet lives togetherA
From dawn till the dew falls downB
They danced over rock and heatherA
Away from the dusty townB
-
Dark eyes like stars set in pansiesC
Blue eyes like a hero's boldD
Their thoughts were all pearl light fanciesC
Their hearts in the age of goldD
-
They crooned o'er many a fableE
And longed for the bright capped elvesF
The faery folk who are ableE
To make us faery ourselvesF
-
A hush on the children stealingG
They stood there hand in handH
For the elfin chimes were pealingG
Aloud in the underlandH
-
And over the grey rock slidingG
A fiery colour ranI
And out of its thickness glidingG
The twinkling mist of a manI
-
To day for the children had fled toH
An ancient yesterdayH
And the rill from its tunnelled bed tooH
Had turned another wayH
-
Then down through an open hollowJ
The old man led with a smileK
Come star hearts my children followJ
To the elfin land awhileK
-
The bells above them were hangingG
Whenever the earth breath blewH
It made them go clanging clangingG
The vasty mountain throughH
-
But louder yet than the ringingG
Came the chant of the elfin choirA
Till the mountain was mad with singingG
And dense with the forms of fireA
-
The kings of the faery racesL
Sat high on the thrones of mightH
And infinite years from their facesL
Looked out through eyes of lightH
-
And one in a diamond splendourA
Shone brightest of all that hourA
More lofty and pure and tenderA
They called him the Flower of PowerA
-
The palace walls were glowingG
Like stars together drawnM
And a fountain of air was flowingG
The primrose colour of dawnM
-
Ah see said Aileen sighingG
With a bend of her saddened headH
Where a mighty hero was lyingG
He looked like one who was deadH
-
He will wake said their guide 'tis but seemingG
And oh what his eyes shall seeN
I will know of only in dreamingG
Till I lie there still as heN
-
They chanted the song of wakingG
They breathed on him with fireA
Till the hero spirit outbreakingG
Shot radiant above the choirA
-
Like a pillar of opal gloryN
Lit through with many a gemO
Why look at him now said RoryN
He has turned to a faery like themO
-
The elfin kings ascendingG
Leaped up from the thrones of mightH
And one with another blendingG
They vanished in air and lightH
-
The rill to its bed came splashingG
With rocks on the top of thatH
The children awoke with a flashingG
Of wonder What were we atH
-
They groped through the reeds and cloverA
What funny old markings look hereA
They have scrawled the rocks all overA
It's just where the door was how queerA
-
SeptemberA
