IA
-
Within a Temple of the ToesB
Where twirled the passionate WiliC
I saw full many a market roseB
And sighed for my village lilyC
-
IIA
-
With cynical Adrian then I took flightD
To that old dead city whose carolC
Bursts out like a reveller's loud in the nightD
As he sits astride his barrelC
-
IIIA
-
We two were bound the Alps to scaleC
Up the rock reflecting riverE
Old times blew thro' me like a galeC
And kept my thoughts in a quiverE
-
IV-
-
Hawking ruin wood slope and vineF
Reeled silver laced under my visionG
And into me passed with the green eyed wineF
Knocking hard at my head for admissionG
-
V-
-
I held the village lily cheapH
And the dream around her idleC
Lo quietly as I lay to sleepH
The bells led me off to a bridalC
-
VI-
-
My bride wore the hood of a BeguineG
And mine was the foot to falterE
Three cowled monks rat eyed were seenG
The Cross was of bones o'er the altarE
-
VII-
-
The Cross was of bones the priest that readI
A spectacled necromancerE
But at the fourth word the bride I ledI
Changed to an Opera dancerE
-
VIII-
-
A young ballet beauty who perked in her placeJ
A darling of pink and spanglesJ
One fair foot level with her faceJ
And the hearts of men at her anklesJ
-
IXJ
-
She whirled she twirled the mock priest grinnedK
And quickly his mask unriddledK
'Twas Adrian loud his old laughter dinnedK
Then he seized a fiddle and fiddledK
-
XJ
-
He fiddled he glowed with the bottomless fireE
Like Sathanas in featureE
All through me he fiddled a wolfish desireE
To dance with that bright creatureE
-
XIJ
-
And gathering courage I said to my soulC
Throttle the thing that hindersJ
When the three cowled monks from black as coalC
Waxed hot as furnace cindersJ
-
XIIJ
-
They caught her up twirling they leapt between whilesJ
The fiddler flickered with laughterE
Profanely they flew down the awful aislesJ
Where I went sliding afterE
-
XIIIJ
-
Down the awful aisles by the fretted wallsJ
Beneath the Gothic archesJ
King Skull in the black confessionalsJ
Sat rub a dub dubbing his marchesJ
-
XIV-
-
Then the silent cold stone warriors frownedK
The pictured saints strode forwardK
A whirlwind swept them from holy groundK
A tempest puffed them nor'wardK
-
XV-
-
They shot through the great cathedral doorL
Like mallards they traversed oceanG
And gazing below on its boiling floorL
I marked a horrid commotionG
-
XVI-
-
Down a forest's long alleys they spun like topsJ
It seemed that for ages and agesJ
Thro' the Book of Life bereft of stopsJ
They waltzed continuous pagesJ
-
XVII-
-
And ages after scarce awakeM
And my blood with the fever frettingN
I stood alone by a forest lakeM
Whose shadows the moon were nettingN
-
XVIII-
-
Lilies golden and white by the curlsJ
Of their broad flat leaves hung swayingN
A wreath of languid twining girlsJ
Streamed upward long locks disarrayingN
-
XIXJ
-
Their cheeks had the satin frost glow of the moonG
Their eyes the fire of SiriusJ
They circled and droned a monotonous tuneG
Abandoned to love deliriousJ
-
XXJ
-
Like lengths of convolvulus torn from the hedgeO
And trailing the highway overE
The dreamy eyed mistresses circled the sedgeO
And called for a lover a loverE
-
XXIJ
-
I sank I rose through seas of eyesJ
In odorous swathes deliciousJ
They fanned me with impetuous sighsJ
They hit me with kisses viciousJ
-
XXIIJ
-
My ears were spelled my neck was coiledK
And I with their fury was glowingN
When the marbly waters bubbled and boiledK
At a watery noise of crowingN
-
XXIIIJ
-
They dragged me low and low to the lakeN
Their kisses more stormily showeredK
On the emerald brink in the white moon's wakeN
An earthly damsel coweredK
-
XXIV-
-
Fresh heart sobs shook her knitted handsJ
Beneath a tiny sucklingN
As one by one of the doleful bandsJ
Dived like a fairy ducklingN
-
XXV-
-
And now my turn had come O meJ
What wisdom was mine that secondK
I dropped on the adorer's kneeJ
To that sweet figure I beckonedK
-
XXVI-
-
Save me save me for now I knowG
The powers that Nature gave meJ
And the value of honest love I knowG
My village lily save meJ
-
XXVII-
-
Come 'twixt me and the sisterhoodK
While the passion born phantoms are fleeingN
Oh he that is true to flesh and bloodK
Is true to his own beingN
-
XXVIII-
-
And he that is false to flesh and bloodK
Is false to the star within himP
And the mad and hungry sisterhoodK
All under the tides shall win himP
-
XXIXJ
-
My village lily save me save-
For strength is with the holyJ
Already I shuddered to feel the wave-
As I kept sinking slowlyJ
-
XXXJ
-
I felt the cold wave and the under tugN
Of the Brides when starting and shrinkingN
Lo Adrian tilts the water jugN
And Bruges with morn is blinkingN
-
XXXIJ
-
Merrily sparkles sunny primeQ
On gabled peak and arbourE
Merrily rattles belfry chimeQ
The song of Sevilla's BarberE
