Translations. - Easter. (luther's Song-book.) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCD EBEFGGD AHAHIID JKJKKKD C LKMKNND OPOPQQD RARAKKD

Death held our Lord in prisonA
For sin that did undo usB
But he hath up arisenA
And brought our life back to usB
Therefore must we gladsome beC
Praise our God and thankful beC
And sing out halleluja HallelujaD
-
No man yet Death overcameE
All sons of men were helplessB
Sin for this was all to blameE
For no one yet was guiltlessF
So Death came that early hourG
Over us took up the powerG
Us held in's kingdom captive HallelujaD
-
Jesus Christ God's only SonA
Into our place descendingH
Away with all our sins hath doneA
And therewith from Death rendingH
Right and might made him a japeI
Left him nothing but Death's shapeI
His ancient sting he has lost it HallelujaD
-
That was a right wondrous strifeJ
When Death in Life's grip wallowedK
Off victorious came LifeJ
Death he hath upswallowedK
Scripture itself has told us thatK
How one Death the other ateK
Now is Death become a laughter HallelujaD
-
Footnote Certain eastern tales of rival enchanters seem to have been present to Luther's mind when he thought of our Lord as the Death of Evil devouring the Death of Good I have translated very closelyC
-
Here is the true Easter lambL
That God said must be sharedK
Which up on the cross's stemM
In Love's fire is preparedK
His blood on our door post liesN
Faith holds that before Death's eyesN
The destroyer dares not touch us HallelujaD
-
So we keep high feast of graceO
Hearty the joy and glee isP
That shines on us from his faceO
The sun himself ah he isP
Who by his brightness divineQ
Through and through makes our hearts shineQ
The night of our sins is over HallelujaD
-
We eat and well so we fareR
True Easter cakes sans leavenA
For th' old leaven shall not shareR
In the new word from heavenA
Christ himself will be the foodK
He alone fill us with goodK
Faith will live on nothing other HallelujaD
