On dark benches they sit packedA
-
And lift extinguished looksB
-
To the cross The lights gleam as if coveredC
-
And cloudy and as if covered the head of woundsD
-
The incense rises from a golden vesselE
-
To the height dying songsF
-
Exhale and as if afflicted the room dusksF
-
Uncertainly and sweet The priest stridesF
-
Before the altar but he practices the pious ritesF
-
With tired spirit a miserable playerG
-
Before bad prayers with numb heartsF
-
In soulless play with bread and wineH
-
The bell sounds The lights flicker more cloudilyE
-
And paler as if covered the head of woundsF
-
The organ hisses In dead hearts memoryI
-
shudders on A bleeding countenance of painJ
-
Wraps itself in darkness and the despairK
-
Stares after him in the emptiness from many eyesF
-
And one who sounded like all voicesF
-
Sobs meanwhile the horror grew in the roomL
-
The death horror grew Have mercy on usF
-
LordM
