Geoffrey_E_Hill: Loser male for certain. Current studies indicate that yellow to red transformation depends on cellular homeostasis. If the cellular environment is out of wack, birds lose the ability to for red to yellow transformation. No way to sugar coat this--LOSER.
Geoffrey_E_Hill: Might be able to skip a generation now and then, but selection in the female germ line takes out deleterious mutations in both the N and mt genomes. Selection on female germ line is the front line defense against deleterious mutations in those genomes.
Geoffrey_E_Hill: Hard to know what that means. HOFI are monogamous so even low quality males can get mates but they are typically the last breeders, have the highest nest failure rates, and lowest output of fledged young.
