To His Book Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDECC FGFGCC HIHICC JKJKCC

You vain self conscious little bookA
Companion of my happy daysB
How eagerly you seem to lookA
For wider fields to spread your laysB
My desk and locks cannot contain youC
Nor blush of modesty restrain youC
-
Well then begone fool that thou artD
But do not come to me and cryE
When critics strike you to the heartD
Oh wretched little book am IE
You know I tried to educate youC
To shun the fate that must await youC
-
In youth you may encounter friendsF
Pray this prediction be not wrongG
But wait until old age descendsF
And thumbs have smeared your gentlest songG
Then will the moths connive to eat youC
And rural libraries secrete youC
-
However should a friend some wordH
Of my obscure career requestI
Tell him how deeply I was stirredH
To spread my wings beyond the nestI
Take from my years which are before youC
To boom my merits I implore youC
-
Tell him that I am short and fatJ
Quick in my temper soon appeasedK
With locks of gray but what of thatJ
Loving the sun with nature pleasedK
I'm more than four and forty hark youC
But ready for a night off mark youC
