In the war and drought ravaged SudanA
A vulture stood watchB
Over a dying childC
Ravished by hunger and starvationD
A little more than a human skeletonD
-
He lay dyingE
On the dirt gaspingE
Taking his last breathF
In the throes of imminent deathF
-
A man saw a good storyG
A front page newsH
With his powerful cameraI
The scene he capturedJ
For the whole worldK
For posterityG
He needed itL
To show the imperative of actionD
To save the world's childrenD
-
He took the shotM
And the next flight tookN
Away to his comfort zoneO
But to a humanistP
There were two vulturesQ
At the scene one of themR
Had a camera the manA
Who made no effortsS
To save dying humanityG

Poet's note: Kevin Carter took a picture of a starving child at Ayod in Sudan in 1993 which was published by the New York Times. But readers criticised Carter for doing nothing to help the starving child. The poem examines this story in the light of the human angle and encourages people to help the needy.
