And there we were together againA
Together again we threeB
Morgan Fingal fiddle and allC
They had come for the night with meB
-
The spirit of joy was in Morgan's wristD
There were songs in Fingal's throatE
And secure outside for the spray to drenchF
Was a tossed and empty boatE
-
And there were the pipes and there was the punchG
And somewhere were twelve yearsH
So it came in the manner of things unsoughtE
That a quick knock vexed our earsH
-
The night wind hovered and shrieked and snarledE
And I heard Fingal swearI
Then I opened the door but I found no moreJ
Than a chalk skinned woman thereI
-
I looked and at last What is it I saidE
What is it that we can doE
But never a word could I get from herK
But You you three it is youE
-
Now the sense of a crazy speech like thatE
Was more than a man could makeL
So I said But we we are what we threeB
And I saw the creature shakeL
-
Be quick she cried for I left her deadE
And I was afraid to comeM
But you you three God made it beB
Will ferry the dead girl homeN
-
Be quick be quick but listen to thatE
Who is that makes it harkO
But I heard no more than a knocking splashP
And a wind that shook the darkO
-
It is only the wind that blows I saidE
And the boat that rocks outsideE
And I watched her there and I pitied her thereI
Be quick be quick she criedE
-
She cried so loud that her voice went inQ
To find where my two friends wereK
So Morgan came and Fingal cameR
And out we went with herK
-
'T was a lonely way for a man to takeL
And a fearsome way for threeB
And over the water and all day longS
They had come for the night with meB
-
But the girl was dead as the woman had saidE
And the best we could see to doE
Was to lay her aboard The north wind roaredE
And into the night we flewE
-
Four of us living and one for a ghostE
Furrowing crest and swellT
Through the surge and the dark for that faint far sparkO
We ploughed with AzraelT
-
Three of us ruffled and one gone madE
Crashing to south we wentE
And three of us there were too spattered to careI
What this late sailing meantE
-
So down we steered and along we toreJ
Through the flash of the midnight foamN
Silent enough to be ghosts on guardE
We ferried the dead girl homeN
-
We ferried her down to the voiceless wharfU
And we carried her up to the lightE
And we left the two to the father thereI
Who counted the coals that nightE
-
Then back we steered through the foam againA
But our thoughts were fast and fewE
And all we did was to crowd the surgeV
And to measure the life we knewE
-
Till at last we came where a dancing gleamW
Skipped out to us we threeB
And the dark wet mooring pointed homeN
Like a finger from the seaB
-
Then out we pushed the teetering skiffX
And in we drew to the stairsY
And up we went each man contentE
With a life that fed no caresY
-
Fingers were cold and feet were coldE
And the tide was cold and roughZ
But the light was warm and the room was warmA2
And the world was good enoughZ
-
And there were the pipes and there was the punchG
More shrewd than Satan's tearsY
Fingal had fashioned it all by himselfB2
With a craft that comes of yearsH
-
And there we were together againA
Together again we threeB
Morgan Fingal fiddle and allT
They were there for the night with meB
