Born in 1869, Edwin Arlington Robinson spent his early childhood and youth in Gardiner, Maine, which became the 'Tilbury Town' of his poems. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1922, 1925 and 1928, Robinson excelled in the dramatic lyric, often blending wry humor and implicit tragedy in graphic poems distinguished by precise diction and skillfully rhymed stanzas. Frequently regarded as pessimistic, his austere works tended to focus on human failures. In addition to the famous title pieces, this volume contains such poems as 'Richard Cory', 'On the night of a Friend's Wedding' and 'The Dead Village', from 'Children of the Night'; 'The Return of Morgan and Fingal' and 'As a world would have it' from 'Captain Craig'; 'The White Lights', 'Alma Mater' and 'How Annandale Went Out' from 'The Town Down the River'; 'Flammonde' 'Eros Turannos' and 'Another Dark Lady' from 'The Man Against the Sky'; and many more.

Published Date: 1997

"Edwin Arlington Robinson's finely crafted, formal rhythms mirror the tension the poet sees between life's immutable circumstances and humanity's often tragic attempts to exert control. At once dramatic and witty, his poems lay bare the loneliness and despair of life in genteel small towns, the tyranny of love, and unspoken, unnoticed suffering. The fictional characters he created in "Reuben Bright," "Miniver Cheevy," and "Richard Cory," and the historical figures he brought to life - Lincoln in "The Master" and the great painter in "Rembrandt to Rembrandt" - harbor demons and passions the world treats with indifference or cruelty. With an introduction that sheds light on Robinson's influence on poets from Eliot and Pound to Frost and Berryman, this collection brings an unjustly neglected poet to a new generation of readers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The letters begin when the 27-year-old poet writes gratefully to the stranger who has expressed appreciation of his first book of poems. `Traditional yet original, realistic but not in the reductive sense, he is too good to be forgotten.' ROBERTSON DAVIES Robinson's Arthurian poems, published between 1917 and 1927, won him a Pulitzer prize and yet are almost unknown today. With his introspective New England style and quiet tone, he brilliantly catches the tension between reason and passion that drives the characters of the Arthurian stories: these are modern lovers, with the philosophical and psychological concerns of the early 20th century. The sense of vision, and the feeling that the world of Arthur mirrors the fate of all mankind, binds the diverse characters together, and makes Robinson's poems essential reading for everyone interested in the Arthurian legend in the twentieth century.
