The Swagman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIEEDDJJ KKCCLLMNOOFFIIPP JJQQ

Oh he was old and he was spareA
His bushy whiskers and his hairA
Were all fussed up and very greyB
He said he'd come a long long wayB
And had a long long way to goC
Each boot was broken at the toeC
And he'd a swag upon his backD
His billy can as black as blackD
Was just the thing for making teaE
At picnics so it seemed to meE
-
'Twas hard to earn a bite of breadF
He told me Then he shook his headF
And all the little corks that hungG
Around his hat brim danced and swungG
And bobbed about his face and whenH
I laughed he made them dance againH
He said they were for keeping fliesI
The pesky varmints from his eyesI
He called me Codger Now you seeE
The best days of your life said heE
But days will come to bend your backD
And when they come keep off the trackD
Keep off young codger if you canJ
He seemed a funny sort of manJ
-
He told me that he wanted workK
But jobs were scarce this side of BourkeK
And he supposed he'd have to goC
Another fifty mile or soC
Nigh all my life the track I've walkedL
He said I liked the way he talkedL
And oh the places he had seenM
I don't know where he had not beenN
On every road in every townO
All through the country up and downO
Young codger shun the track he saidF
And put his hand upon my headF
I noticed then that his old eyesI
Were very blue and very wiseI
Ay once I was a little ladP
He said and seemed to grow quite sadP
-
I sometimes think When I'm a manJ
I'll get a good black billy canJ
And hang some corks around my hatQ
And lead a jolly life like thatQ
