Epistle To Mrs. Tyler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGG HHIIJJ JJKKLLMMIINNOOPPQQRR SSIt ever was allow'd dear Madam | A |
Ev'n from the days of father Adam | A |
Of all perfection flesh is heir to | B |
Fair patience is the gentlest virtue | B |
This is a truth our grandames teach | C |
Our poets sing and parsons preach | C |
Yet after all dear Moll the fact is | D |
We seldom put it into practice | E |
I'll warrant if one knew the truth | F |
You've call'd me many an idle youth | F |
And styl'd me rude ungrateful bear | G |
Enough to make a parson swear | G |
- | |
I shall not make a long oration | H |
in order for my vindication | H |
For what the plague can I say more | I |
Than lazy dogs have done before | I |
Such stuff is naught but mere tautology | J |
And so take that for my apology | J |
- | |
First then for custards my dear Mary | J |
The produce of your dainty dairy | J |
For stew'd for bak'd for boil'd for roast | K |
And all the teas and all the toast | K |
With thankful tongue and bowing attitude | L |
I here present you with my gratitude | L |
Next for you apples pears and plums | M |
Acknowledgment in order comes | M |
For wine for ale for fowl for fish for | I |
Ev'n all one's appetite can wish for | I |
But O ye pens and O ye pencils | N |
And all ye scribbling utensils | N |
Say in what words and in what meter | O |
Shall unfeign'd admiration greet her | O |
For that rich banquet so refin'd | P |
Her conversation gave the mind | P |
The solid meal of sense and worth | Q |
Set off by the desert of mirth | Q |
Wit's fruit and pleasure's genial bowl | R |
And all the joyous flow of soul | R |
For these and every kind ingredient | S |
That form'd your love your most obedient | S |
