To James Norton Esq. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBAABCDCDDC

Think you I have not skill to gather goldA
If I could love it as some others doB
Or that I lack the spirit of a boldA
And resolute man in any cause that s trueB
Because I scorn to juggle with yon crewB
Of politics schemers Let the truth be toldA
Whatever I can value I can mouldA
Right deftly to my ends and boldly tooB
But fame he sought not through a gainful handC
This of my being let future tellD
Nor through the arts of popular commandC
But in retirement where the muses dwellD
That his life s legacy might be a wellD
Pierian in a wide and thirsty landC
