To James Norton Esq. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABBAABCDCDDCThink you I have not skill to gather gold | A |
If I could love it as some others do | B |
Or that I lack the spirit of a bold | A |
And resolute man in any cause that s true | B |
Because I scorn to juggle with yon crew | B |
Of politics schemers Let the truth be told | A |
Whatever I can value I can mould | A |
Right deftly to my ends and boldly too | B |
But fame he sought not through a gainful hand | C |
This of my being let future tell | D |
Nor through the arts of popular command | C |
But in retirement where the muses dwell | D |
That his life s legacy might be a well | D |
Pierian in a wide and thirsty land | C |
