Onward Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCDEDAAFCCDED AAFCCDED GGDCCDED EEHCCDED

Have the blasts of sorrow worn theeA
Have the rocks of danger torn theeA
And thus shifted wreck like driftedB
Wouldst thou find a port in timeC
Vain the quest That word sublimeC
God s great one wordD
Silent never pealeth everE
OnwardD
Hast thou done all loving dutyA
Hast thou clothed thy soul with beautyA
And wouldst rest then wholly blest thenF
In some sunny lapse of timeC
Vain the hope The word sublimeC
God s great one wordD
Silent never pealeth everE
OnwardD
-
Hast thou won the heart of gloryA
Hast thou charmed the tongue of storyA
And wouldst pause then for applause thenF
Underneath the stars of timeC
Vain the lure That word sublimeC
God s great one wordD
Silent never pealeth everE
OnwardD
-
Truth and virtue hast thou wrought forG
Faith and freedom hast thou fought forG
And then shrinkest for thou thinkestD
Paid is all thy debt in timeC
Vain the thought That word sublimeC
God s great one wordD
Silent never pealeth everE
OnwardD
-
From endeavour to endeavourE
Journeying with hours for everE
Or aspiring or acquiringH
This O man is life in timeC
Urged by that primal word sublimeC
God s great one wordD
Silent never pealeth everE
OnwardD
