Mary Arden Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBBDEDAFFGHCFIFA FBJBAKLKA CDEDBMKMAAF

When a simple English maidenA
Nested warm in WilmicoteB
Sang forth like a lark uprisingC
Heavenward with its morning noteB
Did no English ear that listenedB
Even then foretouched by fameD
Tremble to the prophet musicE
Fountain headed in thy nameD
Mary ArdenA
And to thee thyself O tell meF
Shade of Shakespeare s mother tell meF
Did no dazzling vision comeG
Banishing all thoughts of gloomH
Of the bardic grandeurs waitingC
On thy matron fate when HeF
Who in time should call thee motherI
Should all time s subjector beF
Mary ArdenA
-
Then a mother we behold theeF
With that babe upon thy breastB
That great nascent soul so bird likeJ
Babbling in its fragrant nestB
O what spirit sweetly humanA
O what instincts mildly wiseK
Sucked he from those mother fountainsL
Drew he from those mother eyesK
Mary ArdenA
-
But shall we now spirit baskingC
In the noonblaze of his fameD
Fail to read a sign propheticE
In thy lovely maiden nameD
No it is the star that trembledB
O er a royal poet s birthM
And amongst immortal MariesK
Second to but one on earthM
Mary ArdenA
Glory to thee Mary ArdenA
Shakespeare s mother England s MaryF
