Joshua Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFGHGHIJIJKK LKLKMJMJNN ACACOCPCQQ| When Joshua in the days of old | A |
| Stood forth upon old Jordan s bank | B |
| And past the flood that backward rolled | A |
| His host came dryshod rank on rank | B |
| The warrior angel of the Lord | C |
| A glorious shining creature bared | D |
| Before him there a flaming sword | C |
| And thus the mind of God declared | D |
| Lo I am with you Here shall dwell | E |
| My chosen people here I plant thee Israel | F |
| The walls of Jericho are strong | G |
| And ribbed throughout with many a tower | H |
| And yet her monarch s armed throng | G |
| Stand trembling round his throne of power | H |
| For circling still those walls about | I |
| Behold the Ark of God is borne | J |
| Blow trumphets blow Shout Israel shout | I |
| Tis done and from the earth uptorn | J |
| At once they scatter and disform | K |
| Like the grey cloud built bastions of a bursting storm | K |
| - | |
| Five kings at Gibeon are met | L |
| Five mighty kings of ancient name | K |
| And they are boasting they will set | L |
| A blood red bound to Joshua s fame | K |
| But the sun stands fast on Gibeon s hill | M |
| And the moon is fixed o er Ajalon | J |
| That Israel s host in vengeance still | M |
| Floodlike may spread God s victory on | J |
| And where are now those kings Yon cave | N |
| Hides them in vain or hides them only as their grave | N |
| - | |
| Thus Israel in the days of old | A |
| Led by that prophet of the Lord | C |
| Like a devouring tempest rolled | A |
| Destructive o er each race abhorred | C |
| And all their war how little worth | O |
| To work gainst that prevailing sword | C |
| In Israel s front far flaming forth | P |
| For what are numbers to the Lord | C |
| That multitudinous array | Q |
| Broke melting as it rolled like morning mist away | Q |
