Joshua Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

When Joshua in the days of oldA
Stood forth upon old Jordan s bankB
And past the flood that backward rolledA
His host came dryshod rank on rankB
The warrior angel of the LordC
A glorious shining creature baredD
Before him there a flaming swordC
And thus the mind of God declaredD
Lo I am with you Here shall dwellE
My chosen people here I plant thee IsraelF
The walls of Jericho are strongG
And ribbed throughout with many a towerH
And yet her monarch s armed throngG
Stand trembling round his throne of powerH
For circling still those walls aboutI
Behold the Ark of God is borneJ
Blow trumphets blow Shout Israel shoutI
Tis done and from the earth uptornJ
At once they scatter and disformK
Like the grey cloud built bastions of a bursting stormK
-
Five kings at Gibeon are metL
Five mighty kings of ancient nameK
And they are boasting they will setL
A blood red bound to Joshua s fameK
But the sun stands fast on Gibeon s hillM
And the moon is fixed o er AjalonJ
That Israel s host in vengeance stillM
Floodlike may spread God s victory onJ
And where are now those kings Yon caveN
Hides them in vain or hides them only as their graveN
-
Thus Israel in the days of oldA
Led by that prophet of the LordC
Like a devouring tempest rolledA
Destructive o er each race abhorredC
And all their war how little worthO
To work gainst that prevailing swordC
In Israel s front far flaming forthP
For what are numbers to the LordC
That multitudinous arrayQ
Broke melting as it rolled like morning mist awayQ
