Of Cora once so dearly oursA
Would mournful memory singB
Of how she came when came the flowersA
To leave us with the springB
That day returned which gave her breathC
Was that whereon she diedD
And o er the pangs of birth and deathC
Passed blooming as a brideD
-
The spring it came with never a stormE
And nine times came and wentF
Till its whole spirit with her formE
In budding beauty blentF
-
Yea till its sentiment was wreathedF
About her eye it cameG
And all its foregone influence breathedF
At mention of her nameG
-
And aye her soul her inward worthH
Flushed out in subtle glowsI
As from its heart come mantling forthJ
The ardours of a roseI
-
It was a glory from withinK
That made her face so fairL
A radiant spirit void of sinK
Was working outward thereL
-
Her locks as they were burnished shoneM
In many a massy foldF
Or fell in their profusion downN
Like bursting sheaves of goldF
-
Bright garments of a spirit brightF
That even in the shroudF
Were like the sunset s aureate lightF
Within a lifeless cloudF
-
When she our angel of the sunO
Had spread her wings in flightF
Ah still would mournful memory singB
Of her our lost delightF
-
Child with full orbs of heaven deep blueP
Illumined violetF
So richly gentle touched with dewP
Befringed with glossy jetF
-
When with the spring we saw departF
Those eyes those tresses curledF
Then summer dying in love s heartF
To winger left the worldF
-
Ah soul that wore the snowy browQ
And gentle shining eyesR
Our song hath aye this burden nowQ
Beneath the vernal skiesR
-
In vain the dews of heaven are shedF
Where blight hath been beforeS
So vainly weep we o er the deadF
But only weep the moreS
-
Yet from the bright time of her birthH
And death does faith construeP
How like the spring though not on earthH
Our joy shall bloom anewP
