Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEF FGFG HIJI KLKL MFNF FFFF OFBF PFPF FFFF QRQR FSFS HPHPOf Cora once so dearly ours | A |
Would mournful memory sing | B |
Of how she came when came the flowers | A |
To leave us with the spring | B |
That day returned which gave her breath | C |
Was that whereon she died | D |
And o er the pangs of birth and death | C |
Passed blooming as a bride | D |
- | |
The spring it came with never a storm | E |
And nine times came and went | F |
Till its whole spirit with her form | E |
In budding beauty blent | F |
- | |
Yea till its sentiment was wreathed | F |
About her eye it came | G |
And all its foregone influence breathed | F |
At mention of her name | G |
- | |
And aye her soul her inward worth | H |
Flushed out in subtle glows | I |
As from its heart come mantling forth | J |
The ardours of a rose | I |
- | |
It was a glory from within | K |
That made her face so fair | L |
A radiant spirit void of sin | K |
Was working outward there | L |
- | |
Her locks as they were burnished shone | M |
In many a massy fold | F |
Or fell in their profusion down | N |
Like bursting sheaves of gold | F |
- | |
Bright garments of a spirit bright | F |
That even in the shroud | F |
Were like the sunset s aureate light | F |
Within a lifeless cloud | F |
- | |
When she our angel of the sun | O |
Had spread her wings in flight | F |
Ah still would mournful memory sing | B |
Of her our lost delight | F |
- | |
Child with full orbs of heaven deep blue | P |
Illumined violet | F |
So richly gentle touched with dew | P |
Befringed with glossy jet | F |
- | |
When with the spring we saw depart | F |
Those eyes those tresses curled | F |
Then summer dying in love s heart | F |
To winger left the world | F |
- | |
Ah soul that wore the snowy brow | Q |
And gentle shining eyes | R |
Our song hath aye this burden now | Q |
Beneath the vernal skies | R |
- | |
In vain the dews of heaven are shed | F |
Where blight hath been before | S |
So vainly weep we o er the dead | F |
But only weep the more | S |
- | |
Yet from the bright time of her birth | H |
And death does faith construe | P |
How like the spring though not on earth | H |
Our joy shall bloom anew | P |
