IA
-
In anatomical designsB
That hang about these dusty quaysB
Where books' cadavers lie and sleepC
Like mummies of the ancient timesB
-
Drawings of which the gravityD
And the engraver's knowing handE
Although the theme be less than grandE
Communicate an artistryD
-
One sees which renders more intenseB
The horror and the mysteryD
Like field hands working wearilyD
Some skeletons and skinless menF
-
-
IIA
-
Out of the land you're digging thereG
Obedient and woeful dronesB
With all the effort of your bonesB
Of all your muscles stripped and bareG
-
Say what strange harvest do you farmH
Convicts from the charnel houseB
And what contractor hired you outI
To fill what farmer's empty barnJ
-
Do you our dreadful fate seems clearK
In your design intend to showL
That in the pit we may not knowL
The sleep we have been promised thereG
-
Non being will not keep its faithM
That even Death can tell a lieA
And that Alas eternallyD
It falls to us perhaps at deathN
-
In some anonymous retreatO
To see the stubborn land is flayedP
By pushing the reluctant spadeP
Under our bare and bleeding feetO
