Refectory Mission San GabrielA
-
-
Good said the Padre believe me stillB
Don Giovanni or what you willB
The type's eternal We knew him hereC
As Don Diego del Sud I fearD
The story's no new one Will you hearC
-
One of those spirits you can't tell whyE
God has permitted Therein IE
Have the advantage for I holdF
That wolves are sent to the purest foldF
And we'd save the wolf if we'd get the lambG
You're no believer Good I amG
-
Well for some purpose I grant you dimH
The Don loved women and they loved himH
Each thought herself his LAST love WorstI
Many believed that they were his FIRSTI
And such are these creatures since the FallJ
The very doubt had a charm for allJ
-
You laugh You are young but I indeedK
I have no patience To proceedK
You saw as you passed through the upper townL
The Eucinal where the road goes downL
To San Felipe There one mornM
They found Diego his mantle tornM
And as many holes through his doublet's bandN
As there were wronged husbands you understandN
-
Dying so said the gossips DeadO
Was what the friars who found him saidO
May be Quien sabe Who else should knowP
It was a hundred years agoP
There was a funeral Small indeedK
Private What would you To proceedK
-
Scarcely the year had flown One nightQ
The Commandante awoke in frightQ
Hearing below his casement's barR
The well known twang of the Don's guitarR
And rushed to the window just to seeS
His wife a swoon on the balconyS
-
One week later Don Juan RamirezT
Found his own daughter the Dona InezT
Pale as a ghost leaning out to hearC
The song of that phantom cavalierD
Even Alcalde Pedro BlasU
Saw it was said through his niece's glassV
The shade of Diego twice repassV
-
What these gentlemen each confessedW
Heaven and the Church only knows At bestW
The case was a bad one How to dealX
With Sin as a Ghost they couldn't but feelX
Was an awful thing Till a certain FrayY
Humbly offered to show the wayY
-
And the way was this Did I say beforeZ
That the Fray was a stranger No SenorZ
Strange very strange I should have saidO
That the very week that the Don lay deadO
He came among us Bread he brokeA2
Silent nor ever to one he spokeA2
So he had vowed it Below his browsB2
His face was hidden There are such vowsB2
-
Strange are they not You do not useC2
Snuff A bad habitD2
-
Well the viewsE2
Of the Fray were these that the penance doneF2
By the caballeros was right but oneF2
Was due from the CAUSE and that in briefG2
Was Dona Dolores Gomez chiefG2
And Inez Sanchicha ConcepcionH2
And Carmen well half the girls in townL
On his tablets the Friar had written downL
-
These were to come on a certain dayY
And ask at the hands of the pious FrayY
For absolution That done small fearD
But the shade of Diego would disappearD
-
They came each knelt in her turn and placeI2
To the pious Fray with his hidden faceI2
And voiceless lips and each againJ2
Took back her soul freed from spot or stainK2
Till the Dona Inez with eyes downcastL2
And a tear on their fringes knelt her lastL2
-
And then perhaps that her voice was lowP
From fear or from shame the monks said soP
But the Fray leaned forward when presto allJ
Were thrilled by a scream and saw her fallJ
Fainting beside the confessionalA
-
And so was the ghost of Diego laidM2
As the Fray had said Never more his shadeM2
Was seen at San Gabriel's Mission EhN2
The girl interests you I dare sayY
Nothing said she when they brought her toO2
Only a faintness They spoke more trueO2
Who said 'twas a stubborn soul But thenJ2
Women are women and men are menJ2
-
So to return As I said beforeZ
Having got the wolf by the same high lawP2
We saved the lamb in the wolf's own jawP2
And that's my moral The tale I fearD
But poorly told Yet it strikes me hereC
Is stuff for a moral What's your viewO2
You smile Don Pancho Ah that's like youO2
