Of double depth they made her graveA
And covered it with massive stoneB
And there where silvery birches waveA
They left her sleeping all aloneB
-
These words were chiselled on her tombC
This grave bought for eternityD
Even to and through the day of doomC
And ever shall unopened beD
-
For years the passing stranger sawE
The epitaph of CarolineF
And wondered with a shuddering aweG
That it could dare the wrath divineF
-
Time is of God He does not needH
To work his purpose in an hourI
Years came and went and then a seedH
Borne downwards by a summer showerI
-
Fell gently on the scanty earthJ
Among the heaped up stones that layK
And soon a tiny birch had birthJ
And grew in stature day by dayK
-
The sun the shower the passing windL
All helped the youthful tree to growM
Its little roots ran far to findL
Subsistence in the depths belowM
-
Years passed until at last the treeD
Sundered the stones and made the graveA
Yawn wide that hoped eternallyD
The ravages of Time to braveA
-
Vain was the exercise of skillN
To seal the grave of CarolineF
And vain is every human willN
That strives to break the law divineF
