As those who pass the Alps do sayA
The Rocks which first oppose their wayA
And so amazing High do showB
By fresh Ascents appear but lowB
And when they come unto the lastC
They scorn the dwarfish Hills th' ave pastC
-
So though my Muse at her first flightD
Thought she had chose the greatest heightD
And imp'd with Alexander's NameE
Believ'd there was no further FameE
Behold an Eye wholly DivineF
Vouchsaf'd upon my Verse to ShineF
And from that time I'gan to treatG
With Pitty him the World call'd GreatH
To smile at his exalted FateH
Unequal though Gigantick StateH
-
I saw that Pitch was not sublimeI
Compar'd with this which now I climbI
His Glories sunk and were unseenJ
When once appear'd the Heav'n born QueenJ
Victories Laurels Conquer'd KingsK
Took place among inferiour thingsK
-
Now surely I shall reach the CloudsL
For none besides such Vertue shroudsL
Having scal'd this with holy StrainsM
Nought higher but the Heaven remainsM
No more I'll Praise on them bestowB
Who to ill Deeds their Glories oweB
Who build their Babels of RenownN
Upon the poor oppressed CrownN
Whole Kingdoms do depopulateH
To raise a Proud and short Liv'd StateH
I prize no more such Frantick MightD
Than his that did with Wind Mills FightD
No give me Prowess that with CharmsO
Of Grace and Goodness not with HarmsO
-
Erects a Throne i'th' inward PartsP
And Rules mens Wills but with their HeartsP
Who with Piety and Vertue thusQ
Propitiates God and Conquers usQ
O that now like Araunah hereR
Altars of Praises I could rearS
Suiting her worth which might be seenJ
Like a Queens Present to a QueenJ
-
Alone she stands for Vertues CauseT
When all decry upholds her LawsU
When to Banish her is the StrifeV
Keeps her unexil'd in her LifeV
Guarding her matchless InnocenceW
From Storms of boldest ImpudenceW
In spight of all the Scoffs and RageX
And Persecutions of the AgeX
Owns Vertues Altar feeds the FlameE
Adores her much derided NameE
While impiously her hands they tieY
Loves her in her CaptivityZ
-
Like Perseus saves her when she standsW
Expos'd to the LeviathansW
So did bright Lamps once live in UrnsW
So Camphire in the water burnsW
So tna's Flames do ne'er go outA2
Though Snows do freeze its head withoutA2
-
How dares bold Vice unmasked walkB2
And like a Giant proudly stalkB2
When Vertue's so exalted seenJ
Arm'd and Triumphant in the QueenJ
How dares its Ulcerous Face appearS
When Heavenly Beauty is so nearS
But so when God was close at handC2
And the bright Cloud did threatning standC2
In fight of Israel on the TentD2
They on in their Rebellion wentD2
-
O that I once so happy wereE2
To find a nearer Shelter thereF2
Till then poor Dove I wandering flyY
Between the Deluge and the SkieB2
-
Till then I Mourn but do not singB2
And oft shall plunge my wearied wingB2
If her bless'd hand vouchsafe the GraceW
I'th' Ark with her to give a placeW
I safe from danger shall be foundG2
When Vice and Folly others drown'dG2
