An Invective Against Gold Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDDEEFFGG HHII JJKKDD

OF all the Poisons that the fruitful EarthA
E'er yet brought forth or Monsters she gave BirthA
Nought to Mankind has e'er so fatal beenB
As thou accursed Gold their Care and SinB
-
Methinks I the Advent'rous Merchant seeC
Ploughing the faithless Seas in search of theeC
His dearest Wife and Children left behindD
His real Wealth while he a Slave to th' WindD
Sometimes becalm'd the Shore with longing EyesE
Wishes to see and what he wishes SpiesE
For a rude Tempest wakes him from his DreamF
And Strands his Bark by a more sad ExtreamF
Thus hopless Wretch is his whole Life time spentG
And though thrice Wreck't 's no Wiser than he wentG
-
Again I see the Heavenly Fair despis'dH
A Hagg like Hell with Gold more highly priz'dH
Mens Faith betray'd their Prince and Country SoldI
Their God deny'd all for the Idol GoldI
-
Unhappy Wretch who first found out the OarJ
What kind of Vengeance rests for thee in storeJ
If Nebats Son that Israel led astrayK
Meet a severe Reward at the last DayK
Some strange unheard of Judgement thou wilt findD
Who thus hast caus'd to Sin all Humane KindD
