The Cloud Chorus (from Aristophanes) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCDDC E FGFGHIHIJKJJJK LMDMMLDJJNENE

Socrates speaksA
-
Hither come hither ye Clouds renowned and unveil yourselves hereB
Come though ye dwell on the sacred crests of Olympian snowC
Or whether ye dance with the Nereid choir in the gardens clearD
Or whether your golden urns are dipped in Nile's overflowC
Or whether you dwell by Maeotis mereD
Or the snows of Mimas arise appearD
And hearken to us and accept our gifts ere ye rise and goC
-
The Clouds singE
-
Immortal Clouds from the echoing shoreF
Of the father of streams from the sounding seaG
Dewy and fleet let us rise and soarF
Dewy and gleaming and fleet are weG
Let us look on the tree clad mountain crestH
On the sacred earth where the fruits rejoiceI
On the waters that murmur east and westH
On the tumbling sea with his moaning voiceI
For unwearied glitters the Eye of the AirJ
And the bright rays gleamK
Then cast we our shadows of mist and fareJ
In our deathless shapes to glance everywhereJ
From the height of the heaven on the land and airJ
And the Ocean streamK
-
Let us on ye Maidens that bring the RainL
Let us gaze on Pallas' citadelM
In the country of Cecrops fair and dearD
The mystic land of the holy cellM
Where the Rites unspoken securely dwellM
And the gifts of the Gods that know not stainL
And a people of mortals that know not fearD
For the temples tall and the statues fairJ
And the feasts of the Gods are holiest thereJ
The feasts of Immortals the chaplets of flowersN
And the Bromian mirth at the coming of springE
And the musical voices that fill the hoursN
And the dancing feet of the Maids that singE
