Rovigo Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHHIJKLBMNOPIQ RSTUBHSB

ROVIGO STATION Unclear associations A drama of GoetheA
or something from Byron I traveled through RovigoB
n times and exactly at the nth time I understoodC
that in my inner geography it is a specialD
place although it certainly yieldsE
to Florence I never touched it with my living footF
and Rovigo was always approaching or fleeing behindG
At the time I was filled with love for the AltichieraH
at the Oratory of San Giorgio in Padua and for FerraraH
which I loved because it reminded meI
of the pillaged city of my fathers I lived stretchedJ
between the past and the present momentK
many times crucified by a place and a timeL
And yet happy firmly trustingB
the sacrifice will not be wastedM
Rovigo wasn t distinguished by anything particular it wasN
a masterpiece of mediocrity straight streets plain housesO
only before or after the city depending on the train s directionP
a mountain suddenly rose from the plain sliced open by a red quarryI
like an Easter Ham surrounded by kaleQ
besides that nothing to amuse sadden dazzle the eyeR
And yet it was a city of blood and stone just like the othersS
a city in which yesterday somebody died someone went madT
someone coughed hopelessly throughout the nightU
ACCOMPANIED BY WHICH BELLS DO YOU APPEAR ROVIGOB
Reduced to a station to a comma a crossed letterH
nothing but a station arrivi partenzeS
and why do I think about you Rovigo RovigoB
