Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHIJKL MNOJPD QJRST QUVOCW XJYZA2B2 C2WD2E2C

This will be a night in deep snowA
which has the power to muffle stepsB
in deep shadow transformingC
bodies to two puddles of darknessD
we lie holding our breathE
and even the slightest whisper of thoughtF
-
-
if we are not tracked down by wolvesG
and the man in a Russian sheepskin who swingsH
quick firing death on his chestI
we must spring and runJ
in the clapping of short dry salvosK
to that other longed for shoreL
-
-
the earth is the same everywhereM
wisdom teaches everywhere the manN
weeps with white tearsO
mothers rock their childrenJ
the moon risesP
and builds a white house for usD
-
-
this will be night after hard realityQ
a conspiracy of the imaginationJ
it has a taste of bread and lightness of vodkaR
but the choice to remain hereS
is confirmed by every dream about palm treesT
-
-
the dream is interrupted suddenly by the arrival of threeQ
tall men of rubber and ironU
they will check your name your fearV
order you to go downstairsO
they won t allow you to take anythingC
but the compassionate face of the janitorW
-
-
Hellenic Roman MedievalX
East Indian Elizabethan ItalianJ
perhaps above all FrenchY
a bit of Weimar and VersaillesZ
we carry so many homelandsA2
on the shoulders of a single earthB2
-
-
but the only one guardedC2
by the most singular numberW
is here where they will trample you into the groundD2
or with boldly ringing spadeE2
make a large pit for your longingC
