Women's Suffrage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB BBCC DDEE FFGG HHII AAJJ KKII LLAA MMGG AANO PPPP QQRR

Fellow men why should the lords try to despiseA
And prohibit women from having the benefit of the parliamentary FranchiseA
When they pay the same taxes as you and meB
I consider they ought to have the same libertyB
-
And I consider if they are not allowed the same libertyB
From taxation every one of them should be set freeB
And if they are not it is really very unfairC
And an act of injustice I most solemnly declareC
-
Women farmers have no protection as the law now standsD
And many of them have lost their property and landsD
And have been turned out of their beautiful farmsE
By the unjust laws of the land and the sheriffs' alarmsE
-
And in my opinion such treatment is very cruelF
And fair play 'tis said is a precious jewelF
But such treatment causes women to fret and to doteG
Because they are deprived of the parliamentary Franchise voteG
-
In my opinion what a man pays for he certainly should getH
And if he does not he will certainly fretH
And why wouldn't women do the very sameI
Therefore to demand the parliamentary Franchise they are not to blameI
-
Therefore let them gather and demand the parliamentary FranchiseA
And I'm sure no reasonable man will their actions despiseA
For trying to obtain the privileges most unjustly withheld from themJ
Which Mr Gladstone will certainly encourage and never condemnJ
-
And as for the working women many are driven to the point of starvationK
All through the tendency of the legislationK
Besides upon members of parliament they have no claimI
As a deputation which is a very great shameI
-
Yes the Home Secretary of the present dayL
Against working women's deputations has always said nayL
Because they haven't got the parliamentary FranchiseA
That is the reason why he does them despiseA
-
And that in my opinion is really very unjustM
But the time is not far distant I most earnestly trustM
When women will have a parliamentary voteG
And many of them I hope will wear a better petticoatG
-
And I hope that God will aid them in this enterpriseA
And enable them to obtain the parliamentary FranchiseA
And rally together and make a bold standN
And demand the parliamentary Franchise throughout ScotlandO
-
And do not rest day nor nightP
Because your demands are only rightP
In the eyes of reasonable men and God's eyesightP
And Heaven I'm sure will defend the rightP
-
Therefore go on brave women and never fearQ
Although your case may seem dark and drearQ
And put your trust in God for He is strongR
And ye will gain the parliamentary Franchise before very longR
