'Twas on the heights of Alma the battle beganA
But the Russians turned and fled every manA
Because Sir Colin Campbell's Highland Brigade put them to flightB
At the charge of the bayonet which soon ended the fightB
-
Sir Colin Campbell he did loudly cryC
Let the Highlanders go forward they will win or dieC
We'll hae nane but Hieland bonnets hereD
So forward my lads and give one ringing cheerE
-
Then boldly and quickly they crossed the riverF
But not one amongst them with fear did shiverF
And ascended the height forming quietly on the crestG
While each man seemed anxious to do his bestG
-
The battle was fought by twenty against oneH
But the gallant British troops resolved to die to a manA
While the shot was mowing them down and making ugly gapsI
And shells shrieking and whistling and making fearful cracksJ
-
On the heights of Alma it was a critical timeK
And to see the Highland Brigade it was really sublimeK
To hear the officers shouting to their menL
On lads I'll show you the way to fight themM
-
Close up Close up Stand firm my boysN
Now be steady men steady and think of our joysN
If we only conquer the Russians this dayO
Our fame will be handed down to posterity for ever and ayeC
-
Still forward Forward My lads was the cryC
And from the redoubt make them flyC
And at length the Russians had to give wayO
And fled from the redoubt in wild dismayO
-
Still the fate of the battle hung in the balanceP
But Sir Colin knew he had still a chanceQ
But one weak officer in fear loudly shoutedR
Let the Guards fall back or they'll be totally routedS
-
Then Sir Colin Campbell did make replyC
'Tis better Sir that every man of the Guards should dieC
And to be found dead on this bloody fieldT
Than to have it said they fled and were forced to yieldT
-
Then the Coldstreams on the highlanders' rightB
Now advanced to engage the enemy in the fightB
But then they halted unable to go forwardU
Because the Russians did their progress retardV
-
But now came the turning point of the battleW
While the Russian guns loudly did rattleW
Then Sir Colin turned to the plumed Highland arrayO
And in stirring tones to them did sayO
-
Be steady keep silence my lads don't be afraidX
And make me proud of my Highland BrigadeX
Then followed the command sharp and clearE
While the war notes of the d bagpipes smote the earD
-
The soldiers though young were cool and steadyY
And to face the enemy they were ever readyY
And still as the bare kneed line unwavering came onZ
It caused the Russians to shake and look woebegoneA2
-
And now as the din of the fight grew greaterF
Fear filled the hearts of the Russian giants in statureF
Because the kilted heroes they fought so wellB2
That they thought they had come from the regions of hellB2
-
Oh it was a most beautiful and magnificent displayO
To see the Highland Brigade in their tartan arrayO
And their tall bending plumes in a long lineC2
The scene was inspiring and really sublimeK
-
Then terror stricken by this terrible advancing lineC2
The Russians broke down and began to whineC2
And they turned round and fled with a moaning cryC
Because they were undone and had to flyC
-
Then the crisis was past and the victory wonH
Which caused Sir Colin Campbell to cry Well doneH
And raising his hand gave the signal to cheerE
Which was responded to by hurrahs loud and clearE
