Keepe On Your Maske (version For His Mistress) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGGAACCHHAA DDFFIIJJKKLLFFDDMMAAKeepe on your maske and hide your eye | A |
For in beholding you I dye | A |
Your fatall beauty Gorgon like | B |
Dead with astonishment doth strike | B |
Your piercing eyes that now I see | C |
Are worse than Basilisks to me | C |
Shut from mine eyes those hills of snow | D |
Their melting vally do not shew | E |
Those azure paths lead to despaire | F |
O vex me not forbear forbear | F |
For while I thus in torments dwell | G |
The sight of Heaven is worse than Hell | G |
In those faire cheeks two pits doe lye | A |
To bury those slaine by your eye | A |
So this at length doth comfort me | C |
That fairely buried I shall be | C |
My grave with Roses Lillies spread | H |
Methinks tis life for to be dead | H |
Come then and kill me with your eye | A |
For if you let me live I dye | A |
When I perceive your lips againe | D |
Recover those your eyes have slaine | D |
With kisses that like balsome pure | F |
Deep wounds as soone as made doe cure | F |
Methinks tis sicknesse to be sound | I |
And there's no health to such a wound | I |
When in your bosome I behold | J |
Two hills of snow yet never cold | J |
Which lovers whom your beauty kills | K |
Revive by climing those your hills | K |
Methinks there's life in such a death | L |
That gives a hope of sweeter breath | L |
Then since one death prevails not where | F |
So many antidotes are nere | F |
And your bright eyes doe but in vaine | D |
Kill those who live as fast as slaine | D |
That I no more such death survive | M |
Your way's to bury me alive | M |
In place unknown and so that I | A |
Being dead may live and living dye | A |
