As I out of a casement sentA
Mine eyes as wand'ring as my thoughtB
Upon no certayne object bentA
But only what occasion broughtB
A sight surpriz'd my hart at lastC
Nor knewe I well what made it burneD
Amazement held me then so fastC
I had no leasure to discerneD
-
-
Sure 'twas a Mortall but her nameE
Or happy parentage or placeF
Or that which did mee most inflameE
I cannot tell her very FaceF
No 'twere prophane to think I couldG
And I should pitch my thoughts too loweH
If ever sett my love I shouldG
On that which Art or Words can sheweH
-
-
Was ever man so vext beforeI
Or ever love so blind as thisJ
Which vows and wishes to imploreI
And yet not knows for what to wishK
Thus children spend theyr wayward cryesJ
Not knowing why they doe complayneD
Thus sicke men long for remedyesJ
Not knowing what would ease theyr payneD
-
-
Some god call backe againe that sightL
Ile suffer double payne to booteM
For griefe and anger in mee fightL
So strongly at no marke to shooteL
Not only meanes to winne her graceJ
But meanes to seeke are barr'd from meeN
Despayre enforc't by such a caseJ
Is not a sinne but miserieI
-
-
Pygmalion hold thine Image fastL
'Tis something to enjoy Love soJ
Narcissus thou a shaddowe hastL
At least thereby to cheate thy woeJ
But I no likenesse can inferreI
My pyning fancy to supplyO
Nothing to love instead of herI
For feare of some idolatryI
