FROM THE ICELANDICA
-
-
The King has asked of his son so goodB
Why art thou hushed and heavy of moodC
O fair it is to ride abroadD
Thou playest not and thou laughest notE
All thy good game is clean forgotE
-
Sit thou beside me father dearF
And the tale of my sorrow shalt thou hearG
-
Thou sendedst me unto a far off landH
And gavest me into a good Earl s handH
-
Now had this good Earl daughters sevenI
The fairest of maidens under heavenI
-
One brought me my meat when I should dineJ
One cut and sewed my raiment fineJ
-
One washed and combed my yellow hairK
And one I fell to loving thereK
-
Befell it on so fair a dayL
We minded us to sport and playL
-
Down in a dale my horse bound IM
Bound on my saddle speedilyN
-
Bright red she was as the flickering flameO
When to my saddle bow she cameO
-
Beside my saddle bow she stoodB
To flee with thee to my heart were goodB
-
Kind was my horse and good to aidP
My love upon his back I laidP
-
We gat us from the garth awayL
And none was ware of us that dayL
-
But as we rode along the sandH
Behold a barge lay by the landH
-
So in that boat did we departQ
And rowed away right glad at heartQ
-
When we came to the dark wood and the shadeP
To raise the tent my true love badeP
-
Three sons my true love bore me thereK
And syne she died who was so dearF
-
A grave I wrought her with my swordR
With my fair shield the mould I pouredR
-
First in the mould I laid my loveS
Then all my sons her breast aboveS
-
And I without must lie aloneT
So from the place I gat me goneU
-
No man now shall stand on his feetV
To love that love to woo that sweetV
O fair it is to ride abroadD
